Taking The Fifth (Part One)

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

My wife asked me a question
The one you never want to hear
“This lipstick on your collar
How did this get on here my dear?”
“I’ll get right back to you on that”
My wife then heard me say
Slipped out to call my lawyer
To see if he could save the day

“You only have one option”
My lawyer said to me
“Your gonna have to take the Fifth
That’s how it has to be
The jig is up
Your dead to rights
There’s nothing else to do
But if you take the Fifth
That’s like admitting it is true”

Taking the Fifth
It surely is the only thing to do
When someone’s got you cornered
And they’ve got the goods on you
It’s better that you just pretend
You have no clue at all
Play stupid which should not be
Hard to do and say you don’t recall

Cause here’s some things
You may not know about taking the Fifth
They call them repercussions
This is fact and not a myth
It could be grounds for default
Or an adverse inference
A fancy term that lawyers use
That don’t mean innocence

So if you’re gonna take the Fifth
Best you follow my advice
Claim you don’t remember
Or prepare to pay the price

Taking the Fifth
It surely is the only thing to do
When someone’s got you cornered
And they’ve got the goods on you
It’s better that you just pretend
You have no clue at all
Play stupid which should not be
Hard to do and say you don’t recall
