To Be A Better Man

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

I want to be a better man
The best that I can be
So one day when I’m gone
That’s how they will remember me
I’ve struggled all my life
To be the man I want to be
But up until this time
The simple truth eluded me

It’s not the money that you make
It’s not how tough that you can be
It’s not the woman on your arm
If you go down in history
It’s about who you are inside
And helping others all you can
Whether you can touch a heart
Is the true measure of a man

I’ve struggled all my life
To find the man I want to be
No matter how I tried
I just could never find the key
It’s not how far you hit the ball
It’s not some Ivy League degree
It’s not the way you comb your hair
Or some great secret mystery

It’s the way that you treat others
If you always keep your word
If you speak out against injustice
And you let your voice be heard
If you do a good deed every day
Make charity your plan
These are the things that you must do
To be a better man

So listen what I tell you
There may be time that you still can
Have it written on your tombstone
That here lies a better man
