The Middle Part

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

I sat  down to write a song
It took off to a great start
Now I have a case of writer’s block
Can’t find the middle part
I have a great beginning
And a picture-perfect end
But I just can’t get the middle part
No matter how much time I spend

I’m stuck here in the middle
And I can’t seem to break free
When you’re stuck here in the middle
It’s a perfect travesty
I’ll sit here until lightning strikes
The words will come to me
Convinced if I sit long enough
They’ll come eventually

I must find a solution
It’s a grave necessity
The mother of invention
A spark of ingenuity
A song without a middle
Is an epic tragedy
It’s like bookends without books
And I’m sure you will agree

I know that there is software
That can write the words for me
But that just seems like cheating
So I think I’ll let it be
I’ll do it the old-fashioned way
Called creativity
Some people might remember this
The way it used to be

I’m stuck here in the middle
And I can’t seem to break free
When you’re stuck here
in the middle
It’s a perfect travesty
I’ll sit here until lightning strikes
The words will come to me
Convinced if I sit long enough
They’ll come eventually

I think I’ve got it figured out
McCartney’s scrambled eggs
I’ll use temporary words
And now my song
Will have some legs
With reverse engineering
And a little la di da
Connect a couple dots
And then just proclaim “Voila”

So if you plan to write a song
Here’s some advice my friend
You first must write the middle part
Then the beginning and the end
‘Cause if you write the middle first
The rest comes naturally
And if you do it my way
Then a songwriter you’ll be
