The Greatest

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

They say he was the greatest
To ever play the game
One day I went to see him
The crowd called out his name
He strolled up to the batter’s box
He knew just why we came
And then he took one mighty swing
I’d never be the same

There was a sound like thunder
The ball rose in the sky
It traveled far as I could see
We kissed that ball goodbye
Now every time he plays the game
They come from far and near
Hoping he will hit one out
And play another year

Stand up and cheer the greatest
Who ever played the game
One day he’ll be the latest
To be in the Hall of Fame
And you can say you saw him
That he hit one out that day
And he truly was the greatest
That ever came to play

Heroes all these mighty men
Who stand on fields of green
But then there is the greatest
He’s like nothing that we’ve seen
Now every time he comes to bat
They all write down his name
Knowing that he’ll always be
The best to play the game

Hip hip hooray the greatest
I saw him in his prime
When he was at his very best
A swing that was sublime
Three cheers for the greatest
I watch him in my mind
Where he lives on instant replay
The one you hope to find

I’ll remember all my lifetime
That once I saw him play
That I was standing right there
When he hit one out that day
And I will tell my grandkids
When he’s in the Hall of Fame
That once I saw the greatest
Who ever played the game
