Saying Goodbye To Sondheim

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

I’m saying goodbye to Stephen Sondheim
We loved him for so long
Alone with just my thoughts
And waiting for a song
I ask myself the question
When the time comes that I’m gone
Will the world remember me
When I’ve finally traveled on?

Will the world remember me
When all is said and done?
Will they know that I was here
When the race is finally run?
Will the crowd stand up and cheer
Though it seems like just the start?
Is the measure of a man
Whether he can touch a heart?

If I could do it all again?
Is there anything I’d change?
Would I take a different path?
Would my life I rearrange?
Did I reach my full potential?
Did I really make a mark?
Was there more that I could do?
Is it Sunday in the park?

Though the world goes on forever
Life is over in a blink
There is rarely time to focus
On what other people think
But when the race is over
Time to face reality
You ask yourself the question
Will the world remember me?

Will the world remember me
When all is said and done?
Will they know that I was here
When the race is finally run?
Will the crowd stand up and cheer
Though it seems like just the start?
Is the measure of a man
Whether he can touch a heart?

We all want to be remembered
When we reach that final dawn
When the world wakes up that morning
To find that we are gone
So goodbye dear Stephen Sondheim
We will miss you oh so much
I only hope the words I write
Will hold your magic touch
