Cheek to Cheek

Lyrics by Hal Pollock

I saw this woman at a party
Looked pretty good to me
I asked her for her number
She said “Don’t you remember me?”
“I am sure you are mistaken
Can’t possibly be true
How is it that you know me?
Surely I’d remember you”

“If you really don’t remember
Take a look at your tattoo
Says “Forever Tom and Linda”
Just the way you wanted to
You said we’d be Astaire and Rogers
Forever dancing cheek to cheek
Yours is on the right side
Pull down your pants let’s take a peek”

You show me yours I’ll show you mine
We were really quite a pair
I was Ginger Rogers
And you were Fred Astaire

Then she recounted the whole story
About the wild days of our youth
How we met there at a carnival
The tattoo artist had a booth
He drew a heart with Cupid’s arrow
We put the date on too
Mine was on the right side
We used the left for you

“We spent an hour on the table
So I would remember you
We had a bit too much to drink
Professed our love as people do
You said we’d always be together
It’s not as bad as you might think
This way our love will last forever
In indelible blue ink”

And that’s the way it  happened
Better than a friendship ring
I was so drunk I went along
And now I’m stuck here with this thing

It was then the lights went on
How star crossed lovers came to meet
The day two hearts were joined together
To be forever cheek to cheek

You show me yours I’ll show you mine
We were really quite a pair I was Ginger Rogers
And you were Fred Astaire
